Tan Dun is a contemporary Chinese-born American composer and conductor 🇨🇳🇺🇸 who creates his unique voice through blending Chinese and Western influences. His oeuvre includes symphonic works, concertos, an oratorio, chamber and solo works, film music 🎬 (such as his score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), inventive music rituals and organic music 🪨💧, and his operas. His opera Marco Polo ✨ won a Grawemeyer Award 🏆, and his score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won both a Grammy 🎵 and an Academy Award 🏅.
🎭 Wei Liangfu and Liang Chenyu were a pair of actors and musicians from the 1500s 📜 responsible for the genesis of the Kun school of dramatic singing (Kunqu) and its first full-length opera, Huanshaji (Washing the Silken Gauze) 🌊. The work is known for its elegant lyrics and fine, soft music 🌸. The style as a whole is defined by its exquisite, mild, sentimental, and melodious nature 🎶. Kunqu flourished for around 100 years 🌟, and was eventually replaced by Peking opera 🎪.
