🎀 Cute Composer PRIDE MONTH EDITION: Queer Women Who Rewrote the Rules 🏳️‍🌈🎶 Dame Ethel Smyth (1858–1944) was a British composer, suffragette, and force of nature who refused to be invisible 🔥 She was the FIRST female composer ever awarded a damehood, and her opera The Wreckers (1906) is widely considered the greatest English opera of its time. She openly loved women her entire life, documenting her relationships with figures including suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst and author Virginia Woolf in her multi-volume memoirs. Her motto was literally "I am the most interesting person I know” and she’s damn CORRECT 💅 Pauline Oliveros (1932–2016) was an openly lesbian American composer, accordionist, and avant-garde pioneer from Houston, Texas. A founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s, she was one of the first openly gay musicians in her field — even hosting one of the first same-sex wedding ceremonies in the early 1970s. 🌈💍 Her life's work centered on Deep Listening — a revolutionary philosophy of attending to all sound as music, with meditative, healing intention — and she used it to challenge the masculine, hierarchical structures of classical composition from the inside out .🎧 John Cage once said that through Oliveros's work, he finally understood harmony. 👉 Which one's music do you want to explore more?
