🎀 Cute Composer Series: Radical Queer Voices 🏳️‍🌈🎶 Julius Eastman (1940–1990) was an openly gay Black American composer, pianist, vocalist, and downtown New York legend who refused to be quiet about who he was — in his life or his music 🔥 A pioneer of organic minimalism who performed alongside John Cage, Meredith Monk, and Arthur Russell, Eastman titled his compositions with confrontational, reclaimed language. He said: "I am trying to be what I am — Black, a musician, a homosexual — to the fullest." Eastman died homeless and largely forgotten at 49, but his music has been powerfully revived and now stands as some of the most important American minimalism ever written. ✨ Lou Harrison (1917–2003) was an openly gay American composer whose music knew no borders 🌍🎶 He built his own instruments, co-wrote “Double Music” with John Cage, wrote the first openly gay American opera, wrote commissions for the Portland and Seattle Gay Men's Choruses, and spent 33 years with his partner Bill Colvig — together building gamelans, a straw-bale home, and an extraordinary life. 🎶 👉 Which one's music do you want to explore more?
