Jake Heggie (b. 1961) is an openly gay American composer whose opera Dead Man Walking (2000) — based on Sister Helen Prejean's memoir about a death row inmate — is widely described as the most performed new opera of the last 25 years 🏆 With productions on five continents and a landmark Metropolitan Opera premiere, Heggie writes opera that is radically accessible, blending gospel, jazz, and folk idioms into the classical tradition 🎶 The Wall Street Journal has called him "arguably the world's most popular 21st-century opera and art song composer."
