🎀 Cute Composer Series: Queer Titans of American Music 🏳️‍🌈🎶 Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) was an American composer, conductor, pianist, and educator — the first American-born conductor to achieve worldwide fame, and for decades the music director of the New York Philharmonic 🎼 He earned 16 Grammy Awards, conducted the world's greatest orchestras, and created one of the most beloved musicals in history: West Side Story 🎭💫 He was gay — his wife Felicia wrote him: "You are a homosexual and may never change." His collaborator Arthur Laurents put it plainly: "He was a gay man who got married." After separating from Felicia in 1976, Bernstein lived openly with his male partner. Gian Carlo Menotti (1911–2007) was an Italian-American composer, librettist, and the lifelong partner of Samuel Barber ❤️ He wrote libretti for Barber's operas Vanessa and A Hand of Bridge, sending Barber's Adagio for Strings to Toscanini, and together winning a combined four Pulitzer Prizes. 🏆🏆🏆🏆 Menotti was one of the most successful opera composers of the 20th century, best known for the beloved Christmas classic Amahl and the Night Visitors (1951) — the first opera written specifically for television. 📺  👉 Which one's music do you want to explore more?
