He was openly gay from his first serious relationship, dedicating compositions to his male partners, and his close friend Leonard Bernstein commissioned his final major work. Ned Rorem (1923–2022) was an American composer and the most prolific American writer of art songs in history. He wrote over 500 songs, sourcing texts from Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Plath, Frank O'Hara, and e.e. cummings. 📝🎶 He published sixteen books of diaries that were explosively candid about his gay life in Paris and New York at a time when such openness could have ended his career — or worse.
