🎀 Cute Composer Series: A Love Story Told Through Music 🏳️🌈💙🎶 Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) was the most performed opera composer born in the 20th century 🎭 — and Peter Pears (1910–1986) was the English tenor for whom he wrote almost everything that matters. They met in 1936. By 1939 they were inseparable: partners in life, in music, and in a marriage they called it themselves, decades before it could be legal. Their relationship was illegal in England for 28 of their 39 years together — yet Britten encoded his love into every note he wrote for Peter. The Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo (1940), his first work written exclusively for Pears, set seven of Michelangelo's love poems to his own male lover — in Italian, so audiences at the premiere couldn't understand the words 🎶 Every major tenor role he ever wrote — Peter Grimes, Albert Herring, Captain Vere in Billy Budd, Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw, Aschenbach in Death in Venice — was built entirely around Peter's voice. They co-founded the Aldeburgh Festival together in 1948, built a home together on the Suffolk coast, and left behind 365 surviving letters — one for every day of the year — signed "My beloved man." Before he died, Britten asked his biographer to "tell the truth about Peter and me." After Britten's death, Pears said of their story: "It's not the life of one man. It's a life of the two of us.” 👉 Which work do you want to explore first?
