🎀 Cute Composer Series: Disability Pride Month — Composing as Hearing Fades 🦻💙🎶 Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) was one of the most important French composers of his generation — teacher of Ravel, Nadia Boulanger, and Georges Enescu; director of the Paris Conservatoire; composer of the Requiem, the Pavane, and over 100 songs of luminous beauty 🎶✨ In his final two decades, Fauré grappled with increasing deafness and aural distortion, which caused music to sound painfully out of tune. Rather than ending his career, this "inner silence" led to an "Indian summer" of composition. As his ears failed him, his music became more inward, more harmonically adventurous, more distilled 🌅 He resigned from the Conservatoire in 1920 when completely deaf, and composed some of his most admired chamber works in the years that followed — his Piano Quintet, his Second Cello Sonata — until his death in 1924. His students adored him. He composed to the end 💙 Dame Ethel Smyth (1858–1944) — who you may know from Pride Month as the openly lesbian suffragette who composed The March of the Women from prison 🔥 — also spent her later decades navigating severe hearing loss while continuing to create 🎶 Smyth began losing her hearing significantly in her 50s, eventually becoming largely deaf. Rather than retreating, she shifted her creative energy toward writing — producing six volumes of brilliantly witty, sharp memoirs that documented her life in music and activism with full force ✊ She continued conducting into her 70s with a hearing aid, and her opera The Wreckers remained championed in performance. She once described deafness as "a living death" — yet her creative output during these years remains electrifying.
