🎀 Cute Composer Series: Disability Pride Month — Neurodivergent Composers 🧠✨🎶 Tobias Picker (b. 1954) is an American opera composer who has had Tourette syndrome since childhood — experiencing thousands of uncontrollable physical tics every single day 💫 He didn't receive his diagnosis until his 30s, when a mutual friend brought him to the office of neurologist Oliver Sacks. The two became lifelong friends and mutual muses; Picker later adapted Sacks's book Awakenings into an opera. "Some people have an inner creative energy to them that is born with their Tourette's. I think it's possible that the Tourette's energy helped form me as a composer," Picker has said. In his book Musicophilia, Sacks wrote of watching Picker compose: "I have watched him as he sits almost motionless for hours, orchestrating one of his études — his tics disappear." ✨ Picker has composed five operas — including commissions from the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera — and over 80 other works. He also mentors children with Tourette's, turning his own experience into advocacy 💙 Hikari Ōe (b. 1963) is a Japanese composer who was born with a severe brain hernia 🎶 Doctors urged his parents to let him die. They refused. Even after surgery, Ōe remained autistic, visually impaired, epileptic, and largely non-verbal. His first "word" came walking with his parents near their home — he heard a bird call and replicated it precisely. Music became his language 🐦✨ His parents found him a piano teacher. Instead of speaking, Ōe began composing. His first CD sold over one million copies in the first few years of release 🌟 His music is mature, lyrical, and rooted in the Western classical tradition — composed by a man with an IQ measured at 65 and a mental age of 12, whose father Kenzaburō Ōe won the Nobel Prize for Literature and credited his son as the central inspiration for his entire body of work 💙 👉 Which one's music do you want to explore more?
