She has also written about composing with hearing loss as a guest columnist with The New York Times, reflecting on how her own experience illuminated Beethoven's. She founded the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music in 2017 to mentor emerging composers from diverse backgrounds, and she has personally mentored nearly 100 composers to date 💙 Frank's music blends Latin American folk and mythology with contemporary classical technique into a voice that is entirely, unmistakably her own ✨ Evelyn Glennie has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12, and identifies notes by vibrations she feels through her feet and body; she insists her deafness is irrelevant to her ground-breaking, critically acclaimed work 🥁 The Scottish percussionist is the world's first and only full-time solo classical percussionist, the master of over 1,000 instruments, and the first deaf artist to win a Grammy — which she has done twice 🏆🏆 She performs barefoot to feel the vibrations through the stage, treats her entire body as a resonating chamber, and has redefined what listening means.
