🎀 Cute Composer Series: Disability Pride Month — Redefining Virtuosity 🙌✨🎶 Paul Wittgenstein (1887–1961) made his debut as a concert pianist in Vienna's Golden Hall in December 1913 to critical acclaim. Nine months later, World War I broke out. At the Eastern Front, a bullet shattered his right elbow, and his arm was amputated in a Russian field hospital 🪖💔 As a prisoner of war in Siberia, he lay in the dark and made a decision: he would rebuild his career with one hand. Despite the wartime loss of his right arm, Wittgenstein achieved a worldwide reputation as a virtuoso left-handed pianist and teacher, who commissioned a number of important left-hand works from leading composers of the twentieth century 🎹 Ravel, Prokofiev, Britten, Strauss, Korngold, Hindemith — he commissioned them all, creating a new repertoire that did not yet exist and premiering concertos that are now among the most important works in piano literature. Disability forced music to expand 💙✨ Django Reinhardt (1910–1953) was an 18-year-old Romani guitarist on the verge of stardom when his caravan caught fire in Paris in 1928 🔥 He was badly burned over half his body. His fourth and fifth fingers on his fretting hand were permanently paralyzed — bent into a claw, unable to straighten. Doctors said he would never play guitar again. By developing a unique technique focused on his left index and middle fingers, using the two injured fingers only for playing chords, he managed to achieve a level of technical and musical mastery that remains unparalleled and awe-inspiring to this day 🎸 He invented the entire genre of Gypsy jazz. He inspired Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia — both of whom lost fingers themselves and looked directly to Django as proof it was still possible 🎶 👉 Which one's music do you want to explore more?
