🎀 Cute Composer Series: Disability Pride Month — Composing Through Chronic Pain 💪✨🎶 Darius Milhaud (1892–1974) was one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century — member of Les Six, inventor of polytonality, and teacher to Dave Brubeck, Burt Bacharach, and Philip Glass 🎼🌍 He titled his autobiography Ma vie heureuse — My Happy Life — and meant it, despite the fact that for the last 25 years of his life, Milhaud had been confined to a wheelchair, the victim of rheumatoid arthritis. From the 1950s onwards, Milhaud was more or less permanently confined either to it or to his bed. He continued to compose from his wheelchair, conduct from his wheelchair, and teach from his wheelchair, producing over 443 opus numbers across his lifetime — ballets, symphonies, operas, chamber music, film scores ✨ When a student challenged him once on how he could call his life happy given his disability, she apparently hadn't noticed the wheelchair at all. Milhaud had. He just didn't let it define his joy 💙 Allan Pettersson (1911–1980) was a Swedish composer who grew up in crushing poverty in Stockholm's most deprived neighborhoods and began his adult career playing viola in the Stockholm Philharmonic 🎻 In 1953 he was struck by rheumatoid arthritis so severe it ended his performing career entirely. He spent much of the rest of his life in intense, debilitating pain — and composed 17 symphonies from it 🔥 His music is vast, urgent, and deeply personal — not comfortable listening, but searingly honest. His Symphony No. 7 brought him international recognition after its premiere in 1968, and he went on to become one of the most significant Scandinavian symphonists of the 20th century.
