π Cute Composer Series: Disability Pride Month β Disability as Creative Source πΌβ¨πΆ Molly Joyce is an American composer, performer, and disability arts pioneer whose entire creative practice centers disability β not as something to overcome, but as something to explore, celebrate, and build from ππ΅ In a childhood car accident, her left hand was severely injured and nearly amputated, leaving it permanently impaired. She has achieved this not so much despite a severe impairment of her left hand but through it, The Washington Post wrote. Her primary instrument is a vintage electric toy organ she found on eBay β an instrument she bought on eBay which suits her body and engages her disability on a compositional and performative level πΉ Her 2022 album Perspective features the voices and viewpoints of disabled interviewees; her 2025 album State Change uses surgical records as musical lyrics with adaptive music technologies. She holds degrees from Juilliard, Yale, and a Master's in Disability Studies. Her work has been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, performed at TEDx, and praised by the NY Times, The Wire, and Vulture β¨ Carlie Schoonees is a South African composer based in Cape Town who is autistic and publicly open about how autism shapes her compositional life and creative identity πΆπΏ Her music explores sound, texture, and structure through an autistic lens β creating work that is distinctively, unapologetically her own. She has spoken about the structural barriers that keep disabled composers from concert halls even after pandemic live-streaming briefly opened the doors, and she uses her platform to advocate for genuine accessibility in classical music π Both Joyce and Schoonees represent a new generation of composers for whom disability is not incidental context β it is the subject, the method, and the art itself β¨ π Which one's music do you want to explore more?
