🎀 Cute Composer Series: Disability Pride Month — Composers & Mental Illness 🧠💙🎶 Robert Schumann (1810–1856) was a German Romantic composer, music critic, and one of the most emotionally complex creative minds in music history 🎹 From the age of 23 he lived in cycles of manic creativity and crushing depression, composing furiously in his high periods and barely surviving his low ones. In 1854, hallucinations and voices overwhelmed him🙂‍↕️ He attempted suicide by jumping from a bridge into the Rhine, was rescued, and at his own request was admitted to a psychiatric institution in Endenich, where he died two years later at 46 💔 Clara, forbidden by his doctors to visit, finally saw him two days before his death. Hugo Wolf (1860–1903) was an Austrian composer and one of the greatest song composers who ever lived 🎶 He set over 300 poems to music in concentrated creative bursts of terrifying intensity: the entire Mörike Songbook (53 songs) composed in roughly 5 months 🤯, the Eichendorff Songs, the Spanish Songbook, the Italian Songbook… Wolf lived with syphilis and severe psychiatric episodes that left him unable to compose for stretches of years.
