π Cute Composer Series: Disability Pride Month β Disability, History & the Music That Survived β¨πΆ Frederick Delius (1862β1934) was an English Romantic composer whose lush, nature-inspired orchestral works created a uniquely atmosphere πΏπΆ After 1918, Delius began suffering the effects of syphilis. He was going blind and losing the use of his limbs, although his mind remained sharp until his death. But he could no longer compose. In 1928 a young musician from Yorkshire, Eric Fenby, moved into the Delius home and became his amanuensis β listening as the blind, paralyzed composer dictated music note by note, word by word. Masterpieces like Songs of Farewell, A Song of Summer, Fantastic Dance, Cynara were all composed in complete blindness! Maria Theresia von Paradis (1759β1824) was an Austrian composer, singer, pianist, and music educator who was blind from early childhood. She was one of the most celebrated musicians of the Viennese Classical era, a personal friend of both Haydn and Mozart β and Mozart is believed to have composed his Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat major specifically for her πΉΒ She performed across Europe as a celebrated pianist, toured with her own concert programs, and founded a school in Vienna specifically for the blind and disadvantaged πΆπ π Which one's music do you want to explore more?
