🎀 Cute Composer Series: World Cancer Support Month — Composing Through the Unimaginable 🎗️✨🎶 Claude Debussy (1862–1918) was the father of musical Impressionism — the composer who dissolved the hard edges of the 19th century and replaced them with color, light, and sound that floats between notes 🎵🌊 Clair de lune, La Mer, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune — music that changed what harmony was allowed to be. In 1909, he began experiencing severe rectal pain, and by 1915 the diagnosis was confirmed: rectal cancer 💔 He wrote to a friend: "This illness had to come at the end of a spell of good work. It makes me weep." Dosed on morphine and undergoing what he called "humiliating" treatments, Debussy composed anyway — producing his twelve piano Études and three late chamber sonatas, part of a planned cycle of six he would never finish. Lili Boulanger (1893–1918) was born into illness and composed against it every single day of her short life 🌸 At two years old she contracted bronchial pneumonia that permanently damaged her immune system, leading to lifelong intestinal tuberculosis — now known as Crohn's disease — with its relentless fevers, acute pain, and exhaustion. Despite this, she became the first woman to win the Prix de Rome in music in 1913, composing large-scale choral works, orchestral music, and a nearly-completed opera 🏆 In the final two years of her life, too weak to write, she composed with Nadia at her bedside transcribing every note.
