Rectal cancer. Composed his final sonatas on morphine as bombs fell on Paris. Signed his last score "Claude Debussy β Musicien FranΓ§ais."
Died March 1918.
Lili Boulanger Β· 1893β1918 Β· France
π§ Pie Jesu
Battled intestinal tuberculosis her entire life. Too weak to hold a pen β dictated her final piece to her sister Nadia from her deathbed.
Died March 1918, aged 24.
Two composers. One catastrophic month.

Giacomo Puccini Β· 1858β1924 Β· Italy

Laryngeal cancer. Traveled to Brussels with his Turandot sketches in hand. Died before finishing it. At the premiere Toscanini stopped the orchestra: "Here the Maestro put down his pen."
Johannes Brahms Β· 1833β1897 Β· Germany
π§ Four Serious Songs
Pancreatic-liver cancer. Wrote songs about mortality β not knowing how close his own was. Final toast: "Thank you."
He wrote songs about mortality while battling pancreatic-liver cancer, unaware of how close his life was to the end.

Steven Stucky Β· 1949β2016 Β· United States
π§ Silent Spring
A Pulitzer Prize winner and Mentor to generations of composers. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma in November 2015.
Died Valentine's Day 2016, aged 66 π
Michael Tilson Thomas Β· 1944β2026 Β· United States
π§ Mahler: Symphony No. 5
With 12 Grammys and 25 years leading the San Francisco Symphony, he shared the same diagnosis as Stucky. At his final concert, he concluded, "It's a wrap.β
Died April 2026 π
One disease. Two extraordinary men.

Ryuichi Sakamoto Β· 1952β2023 Β· Japan
While undergoing Stage 4 cancer treatment, he released a final album, documenting each day, using his own breathing sounds on some tracks.
Died March 2023, aged 71 ποΈ
Kaija Saariaho Β· 1952β2023 Β· Finland
She was ranked as the greatest living composer by the BBC. In 2021, she was diagnosed with glioblastoma and completed her final trumpet concerto from her wheelchair.
Died June 2023, aged 70.
Born the same year. Died the same year. Both creating until the end.

Edward Elgar Β· 1857β1934 Β· England
In 1933, he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, which led to him leaving his Third Symphony unfinished.
Jules Massenet Β· 1842β1912 Β· France
Despite battling abdominal cancer, he continued to compose relentlessly even while undergoing surgery.

Sarah Vaughan Β· 1924β1990 Β· United States
She was "The Divine One." Diagnosed with Lung cancer in 1989.
Never got to record it. Died April 3, 1990, aged 66 π
John Coltrane Β· 1926β1967 Β· United States
He died of Liver cancer at 40. Miles Davis didn't even know he was sick. A legend who will be remembered.
Posthumous Pulitzer Prize, 2007.
Two of the greatest jazz voices ever. Gone far too young.

Chick Corea Β· 1941β2021 Β· United States
29 Grammys in hand, he was still performing and recording at 79 when a rare cancer, discovered only weeks before his death, took his life.
Nat King Cole Β· 1919β1965 Β· United States
Lung cancer took his life at 45. His daughter Natalie duetted with his recording 26 years later, and his music lives on.

A pioneer and founding father of the neo-soul movement, he battled pancreatic cancer privately.
