🎀 Cute Composer Series: World Cancer Support Month — Two Piano Legends, Two Cancers 🎗️🎹🎶 Chick Corea (1941–2021) was one of the most versatile and prolific jazz pianists and composers who ever lived — 29 Grammy Awards across a career that moved from Miles Davis's band to the groundbreaking jazz fusion group Return to Forever, from acoustic piano trio recordings to electronic experimentation, from classical crossover to Latin jazz 🎹✨ His compositions Spain, 500 Miles High, and La Fiesta are among the most recorded jazz works of the 20th century. He was 79 years old, actively performing and recording, still generating ideas faster than he could write them down. Then, in early 2021, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer — discovered only weeks before his death 💔 His family announced: "We have lost a link to the universe." He died February 9, 2021. He had just released his first duo album with bassist Christian McBride. He was, until the very end, entirely himself — curious, creative, alive. Nat King Cole (1919–1965) was one of the most gifted musicians America has ever produced — a jazz piano virtuoso of the first order, a vocalist of extraordinary warmth and precision, and one of the first Black artists to achieve mass mainstream crossover success in the United States at a time when that came at real personal cost 🎹🌟 He believed his rich, warm vocal timbre came from cigarettes, so he smoked through most of his career. In 1964 he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had surgery to remove his left lung. He died February 15, 1965, aged 45 💔 At the time of his death, his hit "Unforgettable" was already becoming one of the most beloved songs in American music history. His daughter Natalie Cole would later record a virtual duet with him in 1991 — his voice, her voice, years apart, together again.
