The technique (observed from reference)

• Base clip gets a B&W filter.
• Screenshot the same frame in full color, add it as an overlay on top of the B&W clip.
• Apply a rectangle mask to the overlay — small window at first, showing color through the grayscale.
• Split the masked overlay clip, then keyframe the rectangle scaling from small to full-frame over 1-2 sec — it expands and floods the whole shot with color.

Composer concept — 'Silence to color'

Use the exact reveal mechanic as a literal metaphor: 3-4 quiet moments (you at the piano mid-thought, a blank score page, an empty concert hall/rehearsal room) shown in B&W with NO SOUND. On each one, the brightness-reveal transition triggers exactly as your music enters — the rectangle expands, color floods in, and the sound of your score comes up with it. Each cut is silence → your music turning the world back on.

Beats

• Shot 1 (B&W, silent): you staring at a blank score page. Reveal transition → color + your opening theme, cut to the finished page.
• Shot 2 (B&W, silent): an empty rehearsal room / hallway. Reveal transition → color + music swells, cut to the same room mid-rehearsal with the ensemble.
• Shot 3 (B&W, silent): your hands still over the keys. Reveal transition → color + a musical phrase, cut to hands playing.
• Closer (full color, sound up): a few seconds of the finished cue/performance.

Filming

• Shoot each B&W and color pair from the exact same camera position/framing so the reveal reads as the SAME moment turning on, not a new shot.
• Sync the rectangle expansion to a musical entrance/downbeat for maximum payoff — the transition should land exactly when the sound starts.
