The Ghosts of Chinatown is a new work for bass-baritone, viola, and piano that commemorates the victims of the 1871 massacre of Chinese immigrants in Los Angeles, one of the deadliest acts of racial violence in American history. Composed by Daixuan Ai with an original libretto by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li, the work was commissioned with support from the Peter and Lois Fyfe Faculty Fellowship.
The special performance will feature Grammy Awardâwinning bass-baritone Dashon Burton, violist David Samuel, and pianist Sun-A Park. The evening will also include a visual installation of historical photographs, documents, and contemporary newspaper accounts that provide context for this tragic and often overlooked chapter in American history.
